The Plantation

De Plantage (‘The Plantation’) is situated in the district Commewijne, which takes its name from the Commewijne River. In early days this district was one of the most important areas in Suriname in terms of the number of plantations. Crops included cocoa, coffee, cotton, but especially sugar. The large sugar works and the Marienburg plantation were operational until the end of last century.
De Plantage is situated on the land of the former Montpellier Plantation, where the main crop was cocoa. On the old plantation map of 1840, however, Montpellier is shown as being abandoned as a plantation. Even so, you can still come across cocoa trees, now growing wild, during a walk through the woods.
